The JN-Dog boys’ Flight Engineer and last surviving Johnny Wood crew member Doug Williamson turns 94 today.
Dougie was born on the 8th of August 1925 at Seafield House in Roslin, near Edinburgh in Scotland, the son of a bookmaker and second-youngest of six children.
The youngest of the Wood crew, Doug was still at school when war broke out. He had joined the Home Guard at age 16, and then at the suggestion of his sister’s boyfriend, enlisted in the RAF to train as a flight engineer at age 17.
He was still only 19 when the war ended, by which time he had completed a full tour of 31 op’s, plus one final op’ from which he took a mostly over-land route to get back home, via a German police station cell!
One of the nicest people I have ever met.
Many happy returns Doug, it has been such a privilege and a pleasure to get to know you.
Chris.
